Sedan Cars in India: Then-Popular

For the past few years, sedan sales in India have drastically declined since customers nowadays prefer a car with a high ground clearance that can withstand any road condition. That is why some mass-market carmakers are making sedans with a high ground clearance similar to compact SUVs. Sedan cars, such as the Volkswagen Virtus and its sibling, the Skoda Slavia, boast an impressive ground clearance of 179mm! That’s best suited for Indian roads. Moreover, sedans provide a comfortable ride and are more fuel-efficient than SUVs. There are fewer mass-market sedans on the Indian market compared to SUVs. If you are planning to buy a sedan, then below are a few options that you can consider. Let’s begin.

1) Volkswagen Virtus: This sedan is the longest in its class. The same is with its sibling, the Skoda Slavia, but the Virtus is longer than the latter. For reference, the Volkswagen duo share the same MQB-A0-IN platform, engines, and transmissions. The powertrains offered on this sedan are the most powerful in their class. The 1.0-litre turbo-petrol and 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engines produce 113bhp/178Nm and 148bhp/250Nm, respectively. At the same time, these petrol mills are also fuel-efficient. Both manual and automatic transmissions are available.

The price starts at Rs 11.22 lakh (ex-showroom, New Delhi).

2) Skoda Slavia: As mentioned earlier, the engine and transmission options are the same as the Volkswagen Virtus. That means that it is equally fuel-efficient. In addition, their features are also more or less the same.

However, the Skoda Slavia’s base model is less expensive than the Volkswagen Virtus’s, while the top model of the Slavia is more expensive than the latter. The Slavia’s price starts at Rs 10.99 lakh, ex-showroom, New Delhi.

3) Honda City 5th Generation: It is one of the best sedan cars in India, and its sales have been rising a lot. The Honda City is the only sedan that offers three engine options: petrol, diesel, and hybrid. There is a standard six-speed manual and an optional CVT offered. The Honda City’s mileage ranges between 17.8 kmpl and 24.1 kmpl (all claimed figures by ARAI). On the other hand, the hybrid iteration has a claimed mileage of 26.5 kmpl.

The new Honda City price starts at Rs 11.57 lakh (ex-showroom, New Delhi).

4) Honda AmazeThe Honda Amaze never fails to impress buyers and has received several cosmetic updates in the past few years. However, the ongoing iteration of the Amaze’s exterior has an elevated sense of design since it looks more premium than before. In addition, the Japanese carmaker has added a few features to the new Honda Amaze. In short, it returns what it receives (money). The starting ex-showroom price (New Delhi) of the Honda Amaze is Rs 6.63 lakh.

These are a few sedans that are among the bestsellers in the country. However, several sub-four-metre sedans directly rival the Honda Amaze, such as the Maruti Suzuki Dzire, Hyundai Aura, Tata Tigor, Ford Aspire, etc. Some of these sedans also have CNG and EV variants.
